Dog Day of Service

Alumni, community to gather for work projects, fun Saturday

This Saturday promises to be a busy and exciting time in Okmulgee.

Harlan Ford will hold its 4th annual Car Show, and there will be Cruise Night on Main Street.

The Okmulgee United Way’s Day of Caring Food Drive is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the tent on the parking lot of the former Warehouse Market, 8th and Muskogee.

Jandebeur’s Motor Sports Park will hold youth races Friday night and on Saturday and Sunday will be the Oklahoma State Series Race on the National Track. At 8 p.m. Saturday will be a Stunt Show production and Meet-N-Greet with Bryan Jackson “The Preacherman.”

The other big event is the Dog Day of Service, benefitting the Okmulgee School district.

Dr. Dalawna Brent, district Special Education Director and 2000 Okmulgee High School graduate, along with others, have been working hard to make this day not only fun and productive, but also a fundraiser.

“This will be an exciting time,” she said. “This was kind of something that was a little bit of a brainchild for me. This came on the heels of my 20th year high school reunion that didn't take place.”

Dr. Brent came up with a plan to not only help the district, but also to get the alumni, and community, involved.

The ‘Dog Day of Service’ is “intentionally focused on improving the district facilities, while bringing alumni together,” Dr. Brent said.

This is a community event, and you don’t have to be a graduate of Okmulgee High School to participate.

On Saturday, assigned class groups and volunteers will visit all the district sites, including the sports facilities, and give them some ‘curb appeal.’

At 9 a.m. on that Saturday, alumni, staff and community members will be meeting at the various school locations to carry out work such as planting flowers, mulching plant beds and landscaping.  More details on the work assignments will be made prior to the event.

Here is a schedule of events for the day, according to Dr. Brent.

8:30 a.m. - Arrive @ pre-assigned sites and check in

9 a.m. - Work begins

11 a.m. - Finish up projects; tour building sites; break for lunch on your own (alumni are encouraged to visit restaurants and food trucks in the Okmulgee community, small gatherings at a classmate's home or around the community for cookouts).

3 p.m. Sign ups begin for track and field events at Harmon Stadium

4 p.m. - Track Meet begins (all ages and abilities are welcome to participate). This is a reboot of the Eastside-Westside Track Meet that was held for many years.

5:15 pm - Announcement from Mrs. Dove about great things happening at OPS

6 p.m. - Food, Friends, Family and Fun Field Party at Harmon

At 8 p.m., everyone is invited to head down to Main Street for the Cruise Night around the Square.

“Harmon Field will have games, bounce houses, and water slides,” Dr. Brent said. “Bring the kids, grandkids, or great grandkids and come on out to play and have some good food.”

There will be food trucks available at Harmon Stadium and the concession stand will be open.

“The afternoon/evening is intended to be a tailgating style event with lots of games and activities available on the field,” Dr. Brent said. “It's highly encouraged that you bring your chairs and tents to set up. There will also be a merchandise stand for anyone who may want to purchase Bulldog apparel and trophies or other relics will be on display for photographs.”

“There are so many activities happening in Okmulgee on June 26th,” Dr. Brent said,  “and we just want this to be one of the many events attracting interest in our community. We understand if you aren't able to attend for the full day, but your presence and participation is welcome for any time your schedule allows.

“Donations are being collected through Okmulgee Education Foundation to ensure this Day of Service will continue in the future as a part of the traditional Homecoming festivities.”
